Women are routinely asked to give husband's name or father's name, submit marriage certificates, and even provide "divorce deeds" in case they have legally separated from their husbands.
Given the confusion it seems to have created among people, especially married women who had never had their passports updated on this front, we tried to get to the bottom of it all.
Instead, she can get the travel documents, by giving the names of either of her parents.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that women are free to retain their maiden names in their passports now after the marriage.
While many men and women applauded the progressive statement by the Prime Minister, others took to social media to highlight how they have been using their maiden names in their passport for years now, without encountering any major problems. If there is no change in name at all, kindly write: "Not applicable". The Prime Minister said that when all the schemes for women empowerment would be implemented together, then the people would realise that the government had been working in a planned manner to achieve its goal.
He said his government's "priority" was to register the homes being constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in the name of the woman in a family as their names were seldom found in property registrations.
He said that in the families which avail government welfare schemes, the government has made a decision to give first preference to the women in the households, such as under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, preference would be given to allot houses in women's name. Any sector we look at today, women are excelling and performing better day by day. He also mentioned that more than 1.20 crore rural women have already been showered with the benefits of Ujjwala Yojna.
Modi addressed the event through video conferencing.
Lijjat Papad and Amul are the shining examples of what our women can do if empowered, the prime minister pointed out.
