  • Tillerson, Russia's foreign minister discuss Syria strike

The statement by the Iranian and Russian military chiefs echoed comments made by their countries' leaders in the hours after the US strike.

White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said Syria's "sponsors", Russian Federation and Iran, were enabling President Bashar al-Assad's "campaign of mass murder against his own civilians".

Fallon's comments followed U.K. Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson's cancelation of his trip to Moscow over the chemical gas attack on civilians in Idlib, Syria and the USA airstrike against the Syrian regime that followed Thursday.

Ms Bishop said the attack on the base from which the chemical weapons attack took place was a "proportionate, calibrated and targeted".

Talking with ABC's This Week host George Stephanopoulos, the official, who is set to visit Moscow April 11-12, said he would "call upon Foreign Minister Lavrov and the Russian government to fulfill the obligation it made to the worldwide community when it agreed to be the guarantor of the elimination of chemical weapons".

"Once the ISIS threat has been reduced or eliminated, I think we can turn our attention directly to stabilising the situation in Syria", he told CBS television's "Face the Nation" in a clip released ahead of its air time.

Syria's ally Russian Federation accused the United States of encouraging "terrorists" with its unilateral actions. "If he needs to do more, he will do more", Haley told CNN's "State of the Union".

Tillerson said he isn't afraid of Russian retaliation after the USA strike last week on a Syrian airfield.

The Russia-Iran joint command said on Sunday that the USA military presence in northern Syria, where Washington is aiding its Kurdish and Arab allies against the Islamic State group, was an "illegal occupation".

"When this chemical weapons murder happened to so many people, Russia's reaction was not, 'Oh, how terrible, ' or 'How could they do this to innocent children, ' or 'How very bad is that?' " Haley said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "Their initial reaction was, 'Assad didn't do it". The Russian government has been implicated in numerous attacks against Syrians opposed to Assad's rule - something Moscow adamantly denies.

Syria and Russian Federation each condemned the USA attack. The US military said several Syrian air force jets were destroyed. "Do they want to be a relationship in which we can find areas of cooperation that are in our mutual interest? And Russia was never part of the targeting". "And I think he's making a serious mistake because if you are an adversary of the United States and you don't worry about what Trump may do on any given day, then you're insane".
