  • Los Angeles Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar throws to first after fielding a ground ball hit by Houston Astros' Evan Gattis during the second inning of a baseball game Monday

"Getting grip strength back is tough and until he has that, I'm going to sit him", Hinch said.

Charlie Morton was a little bit here and there but was composed enough to work through all the traffic on the bases.

The Astros offense was never able to string together a big inning, but they did manage to pepper the Angels with nine hits, scoring one run in each of the second, third, and eighth innings.

Charlie Morton and three relievers combined for a five-hitter, Jose Altuve drove in two runs and the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 for their fifth straight win.

Charlie Morton pitched five strong innings tonight, but the real story on the pitching side of things was Chris Devenski, Luke Gregerson, and Ken Giles combining to pitch four ideal innings of relief - it doesn't get much better than that, folks.

Devenski has 21 strikeouts in 11 innings this season.

That Morton posted five scoreless innings was a feat of sleight of hand, as he found trouble two outs into the first inning and failed to produce a clean frame. Ken Giles earned the save striking out two in the ninth to close the game.

"The zeroes that our team put up, Devenski comes in and does what Devenski does, Luke comes in and has a clean inning and that's probably the best Giles has pitched and looked in a while for him", Houston manager A.J. Hinch said.

Third baseman Alex Bregman will start at shortstop and Marwin Gonzalez will be at third.

Trout batted third and played center field. Reddick would score from second, but Altuve would be thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple by Mike Trought.

Jesse Chavez (1-2) allowed two runs and seven hits.

RotoGrinders.com Daily Slant: With Correa out, Josh Reddick (132 wRC+,.174 ISO vs RHP since 2015) moves up to the 2nd spot and Carlos Beltran (117 wRC+,.196 ISO) hits cleanup.

Angels: RHP Ricky Nolasco (0-2) makes his fourth start of the season Tuesday in the second game of the four-game series.

The Astros play the Angels again tomorrow night at Minute Maid Park, starting at 7:10 PM CT.

Big Hurdles Lifted in Arkansas Execution Plan
In 2014, Oklahoma was the last state to try carrying out two executions on the same night, an effort that went badly awry. Critics contend it does not put a person in a deep enough state of unconsciousness and should not be used in executions.
