"In an interim order on Wednesday night, the Election Commission froze the 'two leaves" symbol of the now divided AIADMK and ruled that neither faction will use the original party name in the by-election.

V Maitreyan, an AIADMK MP and an O Panneerselvam loyalist, told India Today that his camp received information that the DMK is distributing money to voters in Chennai's Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar, the late J Jayalalithaa's former constituency. However, they denied that they are purchasing votes with money. The cash distribution is taking place during the night and small hours, reports said.

DMK working president M K Stalin visited a hospital where party cadres were admitted and alleged that Dinakaran-led AIADMK faction was trying to buy democracy using money power.

Actress turned politician Vijayashanthi made a surprise appearance in RK Nagar in Tamilnadu on Friday evening and campaigned for deputy general secretary of AIADMK (Amma) candidate TTV Dhinakaran who is the nephew of Sasikala and lashed out against former CM O. Pannerrselvam.

The DMK, had secured about 33% votes, which faced Jayalalithaa, in the 2016 Assembly elections, is expected to crush its arch rival, AIADMK.

EC replaced Additional Police Commissioner (North) MC Sarangan with H M Jayaram (now IGP, Operations) besides 21 other police personnel.

Former Minister K P Munusamy of O Panneerselvam-led faction too petitioned the CEO on the matter.

"Both the aforesaid parties were issued show cause notices for the said act which violates the Model Code of Conduct, comes within the ambit of corrupt practice as defined under Sec".
