The commander in chief raised $107 million for his January 20 swearing-in ceremony, more than doubling the previously record-holding $53 million President Barack Obama raised for his 2009 inauguration, according to Federal Election Commission records made public on Tuesday. By contrast, only $53 million was raised for the 2009 inauguration of President Obama.
Trump's Presidential Inaugural Committee, or PIC, announced Tuesday that it raised just under $107 million to pay for all inauguration activities.
After giving $5 million, Las Vegas gaming billionaire Sheldon Adelson and his wife had prime seats for Trump's swearing-in ceremony on January 20.
Casino mogul Steve Wynn donated entertainers and production work valued at $729,000 for the Chairman's Ball, where the band Alabama and Wynn's ShowStoppers performed, according to Wynn spokesman Michael Weaver. Phil Ruffin, owner of Treasure Island Hotel & Casino (also known as TI) on the Las Vegas Strip, who is a close friend of President Trump, contributed $1 million. Trump's inaugural committee doesn't have to disclose what it spent the money on or how much was left over.
Stan Kroenke (Rams) and Dan Snyder (Washington) each contributed $1 million.
A press release issued Tuesday hailed it as "one of the most accessible and affordable inaugurations for the public in recent history". He promised to give any extra money to charity.
Numerous companies that donated to Trump, a Republican, have significant matters pending before the US government or have been invited to White House events.
"We are proud that we had the opportunity to support the Presidential Inauguration committee, the organization behind a uniquely American event that allows for the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next".
Unlike Trump, the 2009 committee did not accept corporate contributions and limited individual donations to a maximum of $50,000.
Other donors include some people who were once critical of Trump but may now seek a better relationship with the White House, including NY fundraiser Paul Singer, who once predicted Trump would trigger a global recession but gave him $1 million in early December.
Bank of America, Charles Schwab, Forrest and Lutnick did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Obama took corporate donations in 2013 for his second inaugural.
Former President George W. Bush raised $40 million to $42 million for each of his two inaugurations.
In the past, questions have been raised about Trump's follow-through on his commitments to make charitable donations.
The following National Football League owners donated $1 million: Dan Snyder of the Redskins, Shad Khan of the Jaguars, Bob McNair of the Texans, Robert Kraft of the Patriots, Woody Johnson of the Jets and Stan Kroenke of the Rams.
