However, responders haven't been able to safely access the area to address the two ongoing natural gas leaks. Dawn Patience, a BP spokeswoman said in an email on Sunday that the well has been closed off since Friday last week and the response to resolve this issue is still underway. The oil spray ended Saturday, but the well remained out of control and vented gas through the weekend.

On Monday, almost three days after the leak was found, ADEC announced the unified command had to managed to "kill" the well overnight and end the gas leak.

Shares in BP were down 2.3% at 460.15 pence Tuesday. The second leak is still leaking natural gas, as well as a small amount of crude oil said BP. There had been no injuries and no reports of harm to wildlife.

In 2010, a BP-operated drilling rig called Deepwater Horizon exploded, killing 11 people and spilling almost five million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the largest oil spill in USA federal waters.

North Slope production rose to 565,000 barrels a day in March, its highest level since December 2013.

"Whenever you have an out-of-control well like this, that means something very serious went wrong", Lois Epstein, Arctic Program Director for environmentalist group The Wilderness Society, told Bloomberg.

The nearest village, Nuiqsut (noo-IK-sit), is 50 miles away. That movement broke a well pressure gauge and temporarily delayed efforts to close off the well, the state said.

"Based on an overflight with infrared cameras, the release appears to be contained to the gravel pad surrounding the wellhead and has not reached the tundra", BP spokesman Brett Clanton said Saturday.

The spray of crude onto the pad of the well, which occurred when the well in the bay area of Greater Prudhoe was leaking gas, stopped by afternoon on Sunday.

The leak was initially discovered Friday morning when BP employees saw crude oil spraying out of the top of it.

Alaskan North Slope crude was valued at $1.90 a barrel over USA benchmark West Texas Intermediate on April 13.
