Veterans Affairs and CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) have entered into a collaboration meant to benefit the veterans visiting the Phoenix VA medical center.

"My district is home to one of the largest veterans populations in the country and despite some improvements we've been able to make over the past few years, veterans are still experiencing problems with getting timely access to quality care, especially in rural areas", Rooney said on Thursday. "This allows Veterans to see how VA is performing". Phoenix VA Health Care System nurses will refer veterans to MinuteClinic for the treatment of minor illnesses and injuries through the Veterans Choice Program when appropriate.

VA Secretary David Shulkin is a supporter of finding new ways for increased "integrated care" between the VA and the private sector.

In 2014, then-VA Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned after it was revealed that officials in Phoenix falsified reports about the wait times veterans faced at VA clinics.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was also a POW, supports the new program.

The VA did not indicate whether it received requests from other VA medical centers or how quickly it might expand the program elsewhere.

"By allowing our electronic health records to communicate and share important clinical information, we'll have a more comprehensive view of the Veterans we collectively serve, which will enable important health care decision making and ensure continuity of care", said Andrew Sussman, MD, Executive Vice President and Associate Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health and President, MinuteClinic.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is increasing transparency by launching a new online tool for veterans to get information on wait times and quality of care.

The MinuteClinic partnership may allow veterans to access care much more quickly through the VA referral hotline. Veterans in Phoenix and surrounding communities will not have to wait for long for the services.
