Ducks sweep away Flames with 3-1 win in Game 4

  • Goaltending intrigue arises for Game 4 of Ducks-Flames playoff series

Eaves' awkward-angle stinker briefly let the air out of the Saddledome in the early stages of Wednesday's Game 4 and although the Flames showed oodles of resiliency as they tried to scratch back, the Ducks were on their way to completing a series sweep with a 3-1 victory.

Injured defensemen Sami Vatanen and Cam Fowler are closing in on a return to the Ducks, who haven't lost in regulation in 18 games dating to March 10.

The Flames would make a push in the third to try and tie the game and extend their season.

Calgary carry the play for most of the second half of the first period as Anaheim seemed content with defending. But the Ducks roster depth paid off young defenseman like Shea Theodore, Josh Manson, and Brandon Montour kept the Flames best players off the board and Theodore leads all defensemen in points. He has certainly been at his best in the playoffs and made another magician-like pass to Bobby Ryan to set up the only goal of Ottawa's game-four victory. After a draw in the Calgary zone, Patrick Eaves retrieved the puck in the corner to Brian Elliott's right. Johnson allowed a goal on the second shot he faced, but finished with 20 saves. Gibson was not flawless and was even pulled in Game 3, but he seemed to come up big when it counted the most. Chad Johnson had only recently returned from an injury, which is why I would guess he wasn't given the start.

Elliott acknowledged that the quick hook was "definitely a short leash".

A flight the next morning awaited him and then the process of planning for his next foe would begin Thursday as he and the players returned home to Orange County.

Coyle's second of the playoffs gave Minnesota its first lead of the series after 214 minutes, 38 seconds.

Washington raced out to a 4-1 lead in the opening period before Toronto rallied late on home ice but the Capitals held on in game four. Anaheim scored on Johnson 68 seconds later in his National Hockey League playoff debut.

Giordano gave the Ducks credit "for finding ways to win every game".

Calgary revived on Monahan's redirection of a Kris Versteeg feed at 16:07 to trail by a goal heading into the third. An initial Monahan shot from the slot created a rebound off of Gibson which sent Anaheim's defense into a flurry of panic.

So Carlyle had high hopes when he took over for a second stint as Ducks head coach, but he says of Theodore, "To tell you the truth, he didn't have a very good training camp".

The end of the third was extremely stressful. Eaves picked up a loose puck on the left wing wall, nearly right on the goal line. Finding the puck in his feet, the captain skated it to the red line and deposited a long shot in the empty net, icing the game. After scoring two points in 30 regular-season games, Thompson had four points (2 G, 2 A) in the Anaheim sweep.Capitals D John Carlson had a strong showing (27 for, 11 against, 71.1 CF%, 14-4 scoring chances) and was on for four Washington goals in a 5-4 Game Four win at Toronto.Senators G Craig Anderson posted a 22-save shutout in a 1-0 Game Four win at Boston, giving him a.917 save percentage in the series.Bruins G Tuukka Rask had 26 saves on 27 shots in the loss, and has a.913 save percentage through four games against the Senators.
