Trump made the remarks during a joint news conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, who also sent his condolences to France.

"I do see a role in getting rid of ISIS", the president added, using an acronym for Islamic State.

Trump has pulled the United States out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a pact that he called "a disaster".

Of course, Trump also displayed the requisite factual slipperiness and delusion.

Trump was expected to be a topic of discussion as Italy hosts the G7 leaders' summit next month, which will be part of the USA president's entry into the world of multilateral summitry.

"This has to do with worldwide, what's happening", said Tump. "We'd rather have them be bad without nukes than with nukes", said Counter-Terrorism Expert Michael Leitmer.

Trump has complained that the United States contributes more to the military alliance than it receives. Yet he pointedly stopped sort of telegraphing whether or not the USA would stay in. -European free trade agreement negotiated by the Obama administration.

Italy now does not pay the agreed to 2% of its GDP on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation defenses.

As he offered congratulations on Canada's 150th birthday, Gentiloni said the two countries share "the same line" on many issues. He said that the coming G7 is particularly important for showing unity of intents because of the arrival on it of new leaders, such as Trump and the next President of France. Trump's administration is demanding that Congress fund a bigger US border wall with Mexico and is suggesting that his administration could scrap the USA nuclear deal with Iran.

The 2015 agreement by Iran and six other world powers ended some of the sanctions that had punished and isolated Iran for its nuclear program but maintained others dealing with ballistic missile research, terrorism, human rights violations and money laundering.

Leaders normally give the Holy See several months' notice when requesting a papal audience, and it was not clear whether the pontiff would be meeting Trump, following months of barbed exchanges between the two men who have very different world views.

By design, the nuclear deal does not address those Western grievances, meaning Tehran can be in compliance even as it violates United Nations resolutions and remains a USA -designated state sponsor of terrorism.

"We will help it be strong, and it's very much to everybody's advantage", Trump said.

Trump hasn't given a timeline for when his administration's review of Iran policy - including whether to stick with the deal - will be complete.
