At least two people were hospitalized and police confirmed a Kirkersville police officer was shot, Columbus-based WSYX reported. No nursing home residents were injured. When backup units arrived, Disario's body was laying dead in the street.
Investigators say two nursing home employees were also shot and killed.
The Sheriff's Office said on their Facebook page, "Tragic day".
Friday morning it was reported that a Kirkersville Police Officer had been shot and media reports say he's listed in critical condition at this time. He said he saw people "running" from the Pine Kirk Care Center. Some residents had barricaded themselves in various places, police said.
Disario, 36, had been the police chief for about three weeks.
"Ohio mourns the loss of Kirkersville Chief Eric Disario, who died in the line of duty", he wrote, adding "blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God".
Police did not immediately release further detail on the shooting or the officer's condition.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sihk) has ordered flags flown at half-staff following the fatal shooting of a village police chief in an attack that also killed two nursing home employees. The village of about 500 residents is roughly 25 miles (39 kilometers) east of Columbus.
A nearby elementary school was placed on lockdown after the incident and eventually closed for the day.
According to the Ohio Department of Health, the facility holds 24 beds, which are certified for both Medicare and Medicaid.
None of the residents was injured. A message was left with the center, whose employees appeared wheeling medical carts out of the facility Friday evening to put them into storage while patients are away.
Kasich ordered flags flown at half-staff at the Statehouse and at all public buildings and grounds throughout Licking County in central OH, where the shootings happened.
"Join me in praying for his family, friends and colleagues, and for the others injured in this tragedy", the governor said.
