Double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson overcame a slow start to win the women's 100 metres, her second victory in as many weeks.

The men's 200m features three Olympic finalists including Britain's Adam Gemili, Churandy Martina of the Netherlands and two-time world and 2008 Olympic 400m champion LaShawn Merritt of the United States, who ranked fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in Rio previous year.

Two Ugandans will compete in Shangahi.

The 23-year-old finished fourth in the 200m at Rio 2016, just three thousandths of a second away from a bronze medal.

Top on the list in Shanghai is Olympic 3000m steeplechase champion Ruth Jebet of Bahrain and silver medalist Hyvin Kiyeng from Kenya.

Mercyline Chelangat will run the 5000m that has a star field that includes Kenya Olympic 5,000m silver medallist Hellen Obiri.

McLeod had meant to move to a seven-step start this season but told a news conference ahead of Saturday's Shanghai Diamond League, the meeting at which he ran 12.98 a year ago, he had been struggling with the change.

McLeod, who opened his season with a splendid 13.04 seconds in rainy conditions at the Drake Relays two weeks ago, just missed the meet record 12.97 seconds past year when he ran 12.98 seconds, the fastest time of 2016, on his way to winning Jamaica's first Olympic gold medal in Rio.

"It's my second 100m for the season, so a world-lead (time) is not a bad time", she said.

The 24-year-old has already posted a slightly wind-aided 10.75 seconds this season, and she is targeting a fast time in Shanghai.

The women's 400m race will see Olympic gold medallist Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas battling with Jamaicans Stephenie Ann McPherson, Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby and Novlene Williams-Mills, as well as USA's Natasha Hastings.

Hopes of a second Chinese victory in the field were quashed by Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim as his effort 2.33m in the men's high jump pushed Wang Yu, who recorded a best mark of 2.30m, into second.

The Sarnia, Ont. native is also the defending world champion in the event.

Daniella Bunch finished second in the women's shot put with her throw of 18.98.

At the 2015 worlds, Thompson won silver in the 200, but didn't compete in the 100.

Rio silver medalist Luvo Manyonga, kept the South African flag flying high at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting on Saturday, when he collected maximum points in the men's long jump event, with a Diamond League record jump of 8.61m.

And as is tradition in Shanghai, the 110m hurdles will conclude the meeting and the organizers have assembled a field worthy of any global final.

"The one thing I didn't want is to hit form early during the season since the challenge of maintaining form to the end is enormous", said Rudisha, adding that his desire is to be in good shape ahead of the London World Championships in August.
