This will also be the only race in 2017 to feature more than three stages. The top-10 finishers in each of the three stages get championship points, and the stage winners get "playoff"-ball-sports terminology, again-points for the postseason title races that were referred to as the Chase for more than 10 years".
Even though this race is similar to a normal race weekend, an amenity every Cup Series driver - most live in the Charlotte area - likes about the Monster Energy All-Star weekend is they'll be sleeping on their own pillows over the next two weeks with the Coca-Cola 600 running next weekend at Charlotte as well. Because the 600 is 100 miles longer than any other race, it gets a fourth stage. Tack on the opportunity to earn points at the end of every stage and NASCAR fans should expect plenty of action on the track during every 100 laps. But NASCAR changing things on the fly has become an accepted practice at this point. Teams will only receive one set of Option tires for the race and if they choose to put them on to begin the last stage they will have to start behind the teams that are on Prime tires.
With the additional stage, the Coca-Cola 600 effectively has a greater impact on the championship than any other regular season race - including the Daytona 500 - as it now awards more points. In 2013, before expanding the "playoffs" to 16 drivers, NASCAR extended its Chase field from 12 to 13 drivers.
The one negative with putting too much emphasis on Atlanta is that it was the first race of the season on a 1.5-mile track. Thursday's qualifying for Saturday's NASCAR All-Star Race kicks off 10 days of racing in Charlotte. So, they threw him on in there.
It has been twenty-five years since Bruton Smith's Charlotte Motor Speedway made a decision to host the sport's annual all-star race at night.
Not only is NASCAR making major rules swings nearly every offseason these days, the sanctioning body has yet again changed the rules in the middle of the season.
