  • China presses South Korea on Thaad missile system

"A telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in took place". South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is treating the remarks over the phone as instructions and has started preparing for deliberations with the USA to schedule the summit.

Moon said in his first speech as president soon after he was sworn in on Wednesday that he would immediately begin efforts to defuse security tensions on the Korean peninsula and negotiate with Washington and Beijing to ease the Thaad row.

President Moon talked up Australian wine and beef and said he hopes bilateral trade will develop further.

During their conversation, both agreed to pursue the goal of denuclearization of Korean peninsula.

North Korea said USA and South Korean agents bribed and coerced a North Korean man into joining the plot which was foiled by its state security ministry.

"I will urgently try to solve the security crisis", Moon said in the domed rotunda hall of the parliament building.

Although it is still very early into Moon's presidency, and there are still many factors that could affect all outcomes, the doors to re-connect with Pyongyang have been open.

China's foreign ministry made no direct mention of the anti-missile system in its statement about the discussions. Moon said he would send a special envoy to Russian Federation soon and Putin said he would welcome the envoy.

Trump and Moon will have to iron out many issues when they meet.

He has taken a more conciliatory line with North Korea than his conservative predecessors and advocates engagement. He also said he was prepared to go to Pyongyang "if the conditions are right".

The two leaders may not see eye-to-eye on what could comprise the right circumstances. Conservative critics have anxious Moon's rise to power might cause a friction with Trump, who wants to increase pressure on North Korea with the help of China, the North's largest trading partner and aid benefactor.

"North and South Korea should seek dialogue and negoti-ations at various levels", it added.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping called Moon Thursday to congratulate him for his electoral victory.

A delegation led by a lawmaker of the South's ruling Democratic Party, Park Byeong-seug, will attend the Belt and Road Summit in the Chinese capital on Sunday and Monday, according to a diplomatic source and a South Korean media report.

Meanwhile, North Korea sent a rare letter of protest to the US House of Representatives on Friday warning that a new package of tougher sanctions would only spur its development of nuclear weapons, North Korea's state media reported.
