Those kind of numbers make a third Guardians installment pretty much inevitable, and Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn has already hinted on Facebook that he's working on the series' next film.
That release, which introduced the intergalactic band of misfits played by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper, debuted with $94 million in its first weekend.
And not only did they manage a stellar domestic debut - the team made more than $280 million overseas. Universal's "Fate of the Furious" cruised into second with $8.5 million at 3,595 theaters. The film has now earned a whopping 427.6 million US dollars at the global box office through Sunday, according to studio figures collected by comScore. F&F is tipping toward a major global play as the franchise ages; it's made $950 million everywhere else in the world, far outpacing the roughly 50/50 split that most Hollywood blockbusters still see these days.
In fourth was Pantelion's How to be a Latin Lover, a comedy starring Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez, with US$5.3 million in ticket sales. Even so, the events happening in this galaxy are considered to be contemporary with what is happening in the Marvel films, at least up until the first film, which was released in 2014. "The first thing I do in the morning is roll over in bed and check my phone for the morning box office reports". Indian film Baahubali 2 took the seventh spot.
ComScore also released the estimated ticket sales from Friday to Sunday at US and Canadian theaters. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuted earlier in other territories, but it still brought in another $123.8 million to bring the overall worldwide total $427.6 million when including the USA total.
"Beauty and the Beast", with $4.9 million, landed in fifth place. It's wedged between "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million) and "Iron Man 2" ($128.1 million). But now that Gunn has officially signed on to write and direct Vol. 3 - a threequel that will seemingly complete the Guardians trilogy while simultaneously teeing up a new era for the MCU - the Internet is currently awash with speculation and throwaway rumors pertaining to Guardians 3.
