  • LeGarrette Blount celebrates

The Patriots clearly had their caveats about re-signing Blount, instead adding Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee as free agents this spring.

The Eagles and Blount agreed on a one-year contract Wednesday, giving the team a bruising back to complement their group of smaller, speedy runners.

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Blount will get a deal worth up to $2.8 million.

"I like the guys here", he said.

Blount, who turns 31 in December, basically is the three-down back the Eagles were unable to secure in the National Football League draft.

That leaves the Eagles with Blount, Sproles, Smallwood, Pumphrey, rookie free agent Corey Clement and Byron Marshall on the roster heading into the first session of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), which begin next week.

"I think they are trying to win now, for sure", Blount told the media Thursday, declining to comment on which teams he spurned to decide on Philadelphia. Other than a year ago, the only time Blount rushed for 1,000 yards came back in his rookie season in 2010.

But with six running backs now on the Eagles roster, how will the carries be split? He carried the ball 299 times for a career-high 1,161 yards and 18 touchdowns. The team's running back fortunes for 2017 were always going to hang on the health of Ameer Abdullah - with or without Blount. Though, he has failed to play more than 13 games in each of the past three seasons and continues to be injury plagued. Blount was the top rusher for the Patriots in each of the past two seasons.

Needing a running back who could turn successful short yard downs the Eagles went into the NFL Draft with their eyes set on Dalvin Cook. The Eagles now have six running backs under contract, but the signing of Blount has led some to speculate that the team might cut Ryan Mathews, saving the team $4 million in cap space, according to NFL Network's Kevin Patra.
