Five Guys, which first opened its doors in 1986, in Arlington, Va.is best known for its straightforward burger offerings with limitless toppings and fresh-cut fries cooked in peanut oil.
This year's study was based on input from 102,617 USA consumers age 15 and older between December 30, 2016 and February 21.
"It's a simple burger that's filling and delicious in a guilty sort of way", Hollis Johnson wrote in his Business Insider review of Five Guys.
McDonald's ranked No. 1 for familiarity but was No. 7 overall. Smashburger and No. 10 Steak 'n Shake.
"Other Burger Restaurant brands in study ranked below category average (alphabetically): Burger King, Carl's Jr., Checkers/Rally's, DQ Grill & Chill, Hardee's, Jack in the Box, White Castle", notes the survey.
"The burger brand category has become less fragmented, as regional brands expand and become available in more parts of the country", says Joan Sinopoli, Harris Poll's vice president of brand solutions.
The results mean that the only burger in the poll's top three which remains elusive to Londoners is In-N-Out. Four years later, that figure is at 68 percent among all survey respondents, while 81 percent of millennials said they knew about the chain.
