The shocking photo, first posted Tuesday by TMZ, was part of a photo shoot the comedian conducted with L.A. -based artist Tyler Shields, who is known for his provocative artwork.

TMZ has asked that exact question, and people overwhelmingly think she has.

Last October, Griffin released a spoof campaign ad in which she repeatedly told then-candidate Trump to "fuck off".

"We have to move to Mexico today", she says.

One of the president's sons also spoke out about the picture on Twitter.

"D-List" comic Kathy Griffin was photographed holding a prop of President Trump's bloody, detached head.

Some labeled Ms Griffin as an attention-hungry celebrity looking for a boost to her career.

"Dude, Kathy Griffin doesn't remember when Kathy Griffin was relevant", one person said in a Tweet.

Griffin appeared to be unfazed by the criticism of her photo.

"Tyler and I are not afraid to make images that make noise".
