CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - NASA has chosen 12 new astronauts from its biggest pool of applicants ever.
NASA says the candidates will prepare for the chance one day to join a mission on the International Space Station, or to fly on one of the new vehicles the agency and private-sector companies like SpaceX are developing. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence will announce the names of those selected on Wednesday, June 7, at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. He continued on to earn a doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkley.
Robb Kulin, 33, hails from Anchorage, Alaska. She earned her Ph.D.in geology from UCLA in 2015.
"Growing up in Houston, I had the Johnson Space Center just down the road", she said. According to NASA, he graduated from the US Air Force Test Pilot School with a master's in flight test engineering.
Jasmin Moghbeli of Baldwin, N.Y., an aerospace engineer and avionics officer for the Marine Corps. One of the candidates, Laurel O'Hara, is from Sugar Land.
Cardman previously studied tiny organisms that thrive around hydrothermal vents deep in the ocean while pursuing her master's degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This increased interest may be the result of the ground-breaking future missions, which the space agency has planned. O'Hara is now a research engineer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
Jonathan "Jonny" Kim of Los Angeles; current residence: Newtron, Massachusetts; resident physician for Partners Healthcare at Massachusetts General Hospital; active duty reserve with the U.S. Navy; doctorate of medicine from Harvard. Rubio has accumulated more than 1,100 hours of flight time in helicopters, including 600 hours of combat and imminent danger time. They include scientists such as Jessica Watkins, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena who works on Mars rovers, and Zena Cardman, a geobiologist at Pennsylvania State University in University Park.
The university announced in May that it was part of a research team selected by NASA to "explore transformative system-level aviation innovations as part of NASA Aeronautics' University Leadership Initiative".
Apple to take on Amazon and Google with its new HomePod
Users will also be available to control smart home products such as connected lighting by speaking to Siri through the HomePod. The lack of a breakthrough device has periodically raised concerns that Apple has become too dependent on the iPhone.
